Voorhees Loses in Semifinals

Heidi Voorhees of Valley Village advanced to the semifinal round of the Women’s Trans-National golf championship Friday before being eliminated at the Del Rio Country Club in Modesto, Calif.

Voorhees, a Notre Dame High and USC graduate, advanced to the semifinals by defeating Melinda Daniels of Stanford in a morning match, 4 and 2.

In the afternoon, Voorhees was defeated by Melinda Port of St. Louis, 2 up.

Voorhees was one-under par when the match ended on the 17th hole.

Darren Angel of Northridge fired his second consecutive even-par 70 to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place in the American Junior Golf Assn.’s Rolex Tournament of Champions at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Okla.

Angel finished 11 shots behind runaway winner Robert Floyd of Miami Beach, Fla. Floyd, son of PGA Tour player Ray Floyd, shot his third consecutive 68 in the final round to finish at 273, five shots ahead of Jeremy Anderson of Lake Mary, Fla.

Angel, 17, an AJGA All-American, will play later this month in the U.S. Junior Amateur at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, N.J.

Cross-Country

Veronica Barajas, a former standout at Channel Islands High who ran for Colorado for the past two years, will transfer to Fresno State in the fall.

Barajas, 19, said a desire to be closer to her family in Oxnard and a dislike of Colorado’s cold winters were factors in her decision.

“I wanted to come back home,” Barajas said. “I wasn’t really all that happy (at Colorado). . . . Homesickness had a lot to do with that.”

Barajas, a finalist in the 1992 and ’93 NCAA Division I cross-country championships, placed fifth in the 1990 Kinney national championships as a Channel Islands junior.

Tennis

Former Taft High standout Brahna Pastorini has accepted a scholarship offer from Cal State Northridge. Pastorini had a three-year record of 41-1 at Taft.

She was the 1992 City Section singles champion and reached the section final in 1993, where she suffered her only defeat.

Twins Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo keyed Southern California’s 5-3 victory over players from the South to win the championship of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 16 Intersectional Team Championship at the Pierremonte Oaks Tennis Club in Shreveport, La.

Mike Bryan defeated Eric Jackson, 6-1, 6-1, in singles and teamed with Kevin Kim of Fullerton to beat Jackson and Marcos Cerenko, 6-4, 6-2, in doubles.

Bob Bryan defeated Chad Carlson, 6-1, 6-0, in singles and teamed with Alexandra Stevenson of San Diego to beat Randy Smith and Lorraine Bittles, 6-2, 6-2, in mixed doubles. Southern California was coached by Wayne Bryan, the teaching pro at Cabrillo Racquet Club in Somis.

Baseball

Dennis Mifflin, baseball coach at First Lutheran High for the past five seasons, was named coach at Valencia High, a new public school in Santa Clarita.

Basketball

The American Roundball Corp. Pro Clinic, featuring former area players Don MacLean and Mitchell Butler of the Washington Bullets and Trevor Wilson of the Sacramento Kings, will be held Aug. 8-12 at North Hollywood High from 9 a.m. to noon.

Instruction will be provided by the trio, all former ARC players who also played at UCLA.

The Glendale Bears youth football program will hold sign-ups Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Babe Herman Field in Glendale. Free physical exams will be offered.
