Avocados and celery showed the most dramatic production increases among Ventura County crops last year, according to Agricultural Commissioner Earl McPhail. Avocados jumped 67% over their 1992 value, reaching $49.9 million, while celery leaped 44%, to $113.8 million, McPhail reports.

McPhail isn’t making any predictions about avocados, but he expects celery to decline this year. “The demand isn’t what it was,” he said.

Overall, the county’s agricultural output last year rose about 17%, to $848 million. The top crop: lemons, valued at $216.1 million.
