HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Antelope Valley’s Tapia Punishes Highland After Being Benched, 6-5

Chris Tapia was benched because of disciplinary reasons at the start of Antelope Valley High’s Golden League baseball game against Highland Friday.

But the senior center fielder was summoned in time to lift Antelope Valley to a 6-5, eight-inning victory over Highland to give the Antelopes (12-9) a tie for first place with Palmdale and a share of their first league title in two seasons.

Tapia tripled in Glenn Blair in the seventh and scored on a throwing error as Antelope Valley rallied to send the game into extra innings. His two-out single in the eighth scored David Nichols with the winning run.

Palmdale 10, Littlerock 2--Bobby Harmon went three for three, scoring three times, stealing three bases and driving in a run for host Palmdale (18-6), which finished tied for first place with Antelope Valley in Golden League play.

Jerome Payton--whose two-run triple in the fourth inning gave the Falcons a 5-0 lead--also stole three bases, and Chris Paxton drove in three runs.

Notre Dame 11, Harvard-Westlake 4--Andy Lutz had a no-hitter through five innings and Justin Bunch slugged a three-run homer in the first as Notre Dame (18-5, 12-2) clinched the Mission League title at Harvard-Westlake.

Lutz (6-1) allowed three hits in five-plus innings and Bunch finished with four RBIs.

Robbie Brewster (home run, single, two RBIs), Jabbar Craigwell (two hits, two RBIs) and Chris Crowley (three hits, two runs scored) also got into the act for Notre Dame (18-5, 12-2).

Alemany 5, Bishop Montgomery 4--Robby Rehfeld had two hits, including a two-run homer in the fourth. Freddy Perez (1 2/3 innings) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam to get his eighth save.

Royal 7, Newbury Park 5--The host Highlanders upset the league champions but it wasn’t enough to earn a playoff berth. Although Royal (15-9, 8-6) and Channel Islands finish tied for third, the Raiders won both head-to-head meetings.

Keith Smith, Rich Adams and Brian Collins homered for Newbury Park (18-7, 11-3), which lost its final two league games.

Calabasas 6, Moorpark 3--Josh Morton (8-1) allowed two hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief and struck out four, and Bhret Haessig had three hits as visiting Calabasas (17-5, 9-3) finished with the best record in the school’s history and spoiled Moorpark’s bid for an undefeated Frontier League season.

Tanner Trosper had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, and Morton added two hits and scored two runs for Calabasas.

Rick Collier had two hits, three stolen bases and scored all three Moorpark runs, and Mike Vasquez (8-3) went the distance for the Musketeers (19-4, 11-1), striking out 10.

Westlake 5, Thousand Oaks 3--The Warriors (14-13, 5-9) rallied for three runs in the seventh of the Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks, two runs scoring on a double by Joe Paganelli with one out to break a 3-3 tie.

Simi Valley 7, Channel Islands 2--Ryan Hankins went two for three including his ninth home run for host Simi Valley (18-6, 10-4) in a Marmonte League game.

Kary Kozlowski (6-0) earned the victory for the Pioneers--who finished second in league play--giving up two unearned runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out two and walking two.

Burroughs Ridgecrest 6, Quartz Hill 3--Quartz Hill left 10 runners on base in a Golden League loss. Jonathan Smith and Kyle Goss went two for four for the Rebels (4-12, 6-9).

St. Francis 7, Pius X 1--Five St. Francis pitchers combined on a two-hitter and Steve Marotta belted a three-run home run in a Del Rey League game. Corby Foster added three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs.

St. Bonaventure 8, Carpinteria 0--The Seraphs clinched a share of their sixth Tri-Valley League championship in 11 years as senior left-hander Brad Burnett (7-1) tossed a one-hitter, striking out nine while issuing one walk. Jake Brown was two for three and scored two runs and Donny Harrisson had two RBIs.

Oak Park 11, Bishop Diego 7--Brent Schneider had two hits and two RBIs and scored two runs as host Oak Park clinched a share of the Tri-Valley League title--the first baseball championship in the school’s history. Schneider also recorded his second save with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief. Tyler Blondi scored three runs and stole two bases for Oak Park (13-5-1, 8-4), which shared the title with St. Bonaventure.

L.A. Baptist 5, Western Christian 4--Jeff Baumsteiger drove in Dana Berg from second base with a double in the eighth, lifting visiting L.A. Baptist (19-5, 10-1) in the Alpha League game. Trenton Mooney was four for four with three RBIs and Zack Hernandez went three for three.

Oxnard 5, Hueneme 3--Manuel Canales tossed a five-hitter and struck out nine, and Eric Terrill keyed Oxnard’s five-run, first-inning outburst with a three-run home run in a Channel League finale.

Brian Donohue had two hits for Hueneme (11-15, 5-9).

St. Monica 10, Bell-Jeff 1--Bell-Jeff plays St. Monica this afternoon, continuing a Camino Real League game tied, 8-8, in the sixth inning.

If Bell-Jeff wins, it goes to the playoffs as the third-place team in the league. If St. Monica wins, it ties La Salle for first place.

Paraclete 24, Desert 5--Steve McMurtry had three hits and drove in five runs, and Dan O’Gara (7-1) scattered six hits, struck out 10 and allowed only one earned run as host Paraclete (11-11, 8-4), which benefited from 15 bases on balls, clinched second place in the High Desert League.

SOFTBALL

Notre Dame 10, St. Bernard 0--Amy Goad (9-3) tossed a two-hitter and struck out seven, and Michele Lucente had two hits, two runs batted in and scored two runs for Notre Dame (15-10, 9-3) in a Mission League game at St. Bernard.

Becky Koenig and Michelle Gallo each had two hits for Notre Dame, which finished second in the league.

Village Christian 4, Maranatha 1--Heather Mikels went two for three and drove in two runs and Sarah Sutton had a two-run single in the first inning as host Village Christian (12-7, 8-4) clinched second place in Alpha League play.

Jessie Leivo (12-7) earned the victory, scattering four hits while striking out six and walking two, and adding a two-for-two performance at the plate.

Agoura 3, Simi Valley 1--Megan Kenny (15-8) tossed a five-hitter and struck out eight, and Katie Melvin slugged a two-run double as host Agoura (15-8, 9-5) upset Simi Valley (21-2, 12-2 to finish third in the Marmonte League.

Chrissy Gates, up from the junior varsity, held Agoura to four hits and struck out four.

Moorpark 9, Calabasas 4--Mindy Penrod struck out 12 and walked six for visiting Moorpark, which finished Frontier League play with a perfect 12-0 record.

Jennifer Goodeliunas went three for four, scoring once and driving in a run for Calabasas (8-10, 5-7), which finished fourth in the league.

Alemany 3, Bishop Montgomery 2--Alba Cano and Esmeralda Macias each had two hits for visiting Alemany (20-2, 12-0) in a Mission League game.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALLL

Hart d. South Pasadena, 15-13, 15-5, 15-6--Tim Morshead had eight kills and three other Hart players had seven as the Indians advanced in the first round of the Division II playoffs.

Canyon d. San Marino, 15-10, 1-15, 15-13, 4-15, 15-3--Canyon, the No. 3 representative from the Foothill League, upset Rio Hondo League champion San Marino in the opening round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs behind Brentt Phillips (19 kills), Jason Campbell (17), Marc McMillan (16) and Pat Backes (11).

Setter Bryan Garrison added 63 assists for Canyon (14-3).

Alemany d. Dos Pueblos, 14-16, 15-10, 15-13, 15-4--Dave Zufelt had 28 kills to lead the Indians in a first-round Southern Section Division I playoff match at Dos Pueblos.
