HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Rio Mesa’s Roman Drives in 9 Runs

Vince Roman set a school record by driving in nine runs in Rio Mesa’s 26-2 Channel League victory over San Marcos on Tuesday at Rio Mesa.

Roman, a junior first baseman, broke Dmitri Young’s record of eight runs batted in set in 1991. Young plays in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system.

Roman drove in four runs in the first inning with a single and double. He added a two-run single in the third and hit a two-run home run in the fourth. Roman’s final RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Saugus 5, Canyon 3--The Cowboys took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth on a two-out, two-run home run by Mike Bench, but Danny Cato of Saugus came through with a two-out, three-run home run to win the Foothill League game. Cato was three for four.

Hart 2, Burroughs 0--Senior left-hander Eric Spindt pitched a two-hitter, leading the Indians (17-4, 9-0) to a Foothill League victory. The victory guaranteed Hart a tie for the league championship. Tucker Cannon drove in a run and scored.

Ventura 3, Dos Pueblos 1--Robert Verstraeten took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and Bubba Morales drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the 13th, leading the Cougars (9-9, 7-4) to a Channel League victory.

Dos Pueblos (13-7, 7-4) dropped into three-way tie with Ventura and Buena for second place.

Crescenta Valley 5, Pasadena 0--Senior right-hander Garrett Lee (3-3) pitched a two-hitter, facing 22 batters, one over the minimum. He struck out six and walked one. John French hit a two-run double.

Chatsworth 18, Reseda 6--Tony Montel’s three-run homer capped an eight-run first inning in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Reseda.

Montel and Rod Daryabigi each had three hits.

Palmdale 4, Burroughs (Ridgecrest) 0--David Glick pitched a one-hitter and had 13 strikeouts, and Bob Harmon had a two-run homer for the Falcons in a Golden League game.

Granada Hills 8, Cleveland 0--Jarred Gold had four hits and Jimmy Landress hit a three-run homer for Granada Hills in a Northwest Valley game at Cleveland. Tony Willams had two hits for Cleveland.

Montclair Prep 4, Calabasas 0--Jared Sandler (10-1) pitched his first shutout and eighth complete game for Montclair Prep (15-6), striking out six and walking two in a nonleague game.

Josh Persell went three for three for the Mounties, including a double and an RBI.

Moorpark 3, Santa Clara 1--Andy Huisenga had two hits and two RBIs as Moorpark remained undefeated in Frontier League play. Mike Vasquez (8-2) struck out seven. Moorpark (17-3, 9-0) will play Calabasas in a key Frontier League game today.

Fillmore 6, Carpinteria 4--Fillmore had only four hits but made the most of them in a Tri-Valley league game. All the hits came in a four-run sixth inning.

L.A Baptist 5, Village Christian 2--Ryan O’Connell drove in two runs in the third inning with a triple and scored on Matt Hernandez’s single as L.A. Baptist (15-5, 7-1) won an Alpha League game. Nate Laufer went two for three and pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out four.

Kennedy 13, San Fernando 5--Adrian Guzman had a bases-loaded triple in a 10-run third inning for Kennedy (9-9-1, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game. Richard Prieto , Kevin Serr, Terrmel Sledge and David Soto each had two hits.

Quartz Hill 22, Highland 4--Eight Quartz Hill players had two or more hits, led by Mike Wiessenbauch, who was four for six with three runs and three RBIs as the Rebels (11-10, 6-6) won a Golden League game.

Kyle Goss added three hits, including a two-run home run, and scored five runs. Matt Wilson also had three hits.

Senior right-hander Roger Worley (5-2) went six innings and struck out 13.

Santa Paula 8, Nordhoff 0--Hector Torres pitched his first complete game and Robert Newman hit a home run as Santa Paula posted a Frontier league victory. Raul Santa Rosa and Rueben Barron each had two hits for Santa Paula (7-12-1, 4-6).

Santa Barbara 10, Oxnard 3-- Peter Gutierrez had two hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases for Oxnard in a Channel League defeat at Santa Barbara.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Chatworth d. Roosevelt, 15-12, 15-7, 15-11--Scott Palmer had 11 kills and Tony Abel 30 assists as the Chancellors (8-4) advanced through the first round of the 4-A playoffs.

SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 11, Channel Islands 0--Sara Griffin pitched a three-hitter and hit a grand slam to power the Pioneers (18-1, 8-1) past Channel Islands (8-12, 0-10) in a Marmonte League game.

Griffin (14-1) struck out 14 en route to her 12th shutout.
