SPRING ROUNDUP : Loyola Boys Stretch Volleyball Streak

The Loyola High School boys’ volleyball team rolled over Torrance Bishop Montgomery on Thursday in three quick sets that rarely saw any challenge for the Cubs.

Visiting Loyola, which won the match 15-3, 15-4, 15-6, used the explosive hitting of Pat Klein and Steve Donne to devastate the Knights in less than one hour.

The Cubs took advantage of the Knights’ poor setting and hitting.

The undefeated Cubs extended their winning-streak to seven and remain atop the Mission League with a 5-0 record.

Donne led with six kills and made five assists, while Klein, who only played the first two games, had five kills. Defensively middle blocker Lee Bennett had six stuff blocks and two digs.

The Knights held their only lead when Michael Igloi aced his jump serve to begin the third game. The Cubs then followed up with a five-point run, mostly on Knight errors, including two over-hit spikes and one net violation.

Coming off of a win last week over Harvard-Westlake, which is ranked No. 2 in the nation by USA Today, the Cubs are poised to take the league title. They meet Harvard-Westlake again April 19.

Wednesday, the Cubs visit Division II defending champion Simi Valley Royal.

In Wednesday boys’ volleyball matches:

Bell 3, Huntington Park 1--The Eagles (4-0 in conference) bounced back from a one-set deficit to defeat host Huntington Park in a Southeastern Conference match, 9-15, 15-3, 15-10, 15-11. Eagle Ricardo Lopez led all spikers with 26 kills, Dickie Purcell had 21 and Rudy Flores, 16.

Roosevelt 4, Garfield 1--Trailing 11-6 in the fourth set the Roughriders (4-0 in conference) edged back to beat host Garfield in four sets, 20-18, 15-13, 11-15, 15-12. Roughrider Hector Preciado had 18 kills. Miguel Prado made 14 kills and nine blocks while Manny Valencia had 10 kills and six blocks. Setter Richie Aparicio had 65 assists in the Southeastern Conference match.

Jefferson 3, Jordan 0--Marcos Meza had seven kills, one block and one serving ace to lead the Democrats in a Southeastern Conference match, 15-4, 15-7, 15-11. Ubaldo Adame picked up five digs to lead in defensive plays.

Marshall 3, Belmont 0--The visiting Barristers rolled over the Sentinels in a Northwest League match, 15-3, 15-3, 15-8. Sentinel Ben Collado was held to two kills and made 10 digs. John Lopez had 10 blocks.

In Monday matches:

Bell 3, Locke 0--Dickie Purcell had six serving aces and Ricardo Lopez had five aces for the Eagles Southeastern Conference win, 15-2, 15-0, 15-9. Miguel Sotero had seven kills.

Belmont 3, Lincoln 0--Sentinel Luis Alvarado had three kills. Ben Collado had two kills and served 13 points, including three aces. John Lopez had eight blocks in the Northern Conference victory, 15-9, 15-3, 15-10.

Girls’ Softball

Garfield 29, Jefferson 3--The Bulldogs extended its slugfest 16 runs over the 10-run rule and recorded their biggest victory of the season in Tuesday’s Southeastern Conference game.

“I had my second string playing after three innings,” said Garfield Coach Robert Dorn. “I was hoping their coach would use the 10-run rule. I hate games like this because it does terrible things for softball.”

Dorn said Jefferson did not want to stop the game because the Democrats’ bus had not returned.

Alma Limon recorded her third win in which she gave up only one unearned run. Dawn Gonzales drove in four runs with a home run and a double.

Jordan 11, Fremont 2--Bulldog Veronica Mendez pitched a three-hitter, had three hits, drove in three runs and scored three runs in a Southeastern Conference victory Monday.

Roosevelt 9, South Gate 2--South Gate-transfer Hilda Perales went four-for-four, including a home run in the second inning, to help put away her former school in a Southeastern Conference game Tuesday.

Ram Susie Espinosa had a first-inning home run and Monna Arreola had a triple.

Swimming

Huntington Park 110, Garfield 69--Marcos Dalmacios of Huntington Park swam 1 minute and 12 seconds to win the 100-yard breaststroke as the Spartans won a boys’ dual meet in 68-degree water during a Southeastern Conference meet Monday at Huntington Park.

The Spartans were also led by Jose Cisneros, who won the 50 freestyle in 26.21.

In the girls’ meet, Garfield easily defeated Huntington Park, which only fielded swimmers in the freestyle and the backstroke.

South Gate 129, Eagle Rock 53--Danny Dennis had first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke in an Eastern League dual meet Monday.

Ram Martha Salazar placed first in the 100 backstroke and the 100 freestyle to lead the girls in their 109-68 victory over Eagle Rock.
