The Orange County Urban League will honor prominent Americans at its 11th annual Awards Banquet today at the Irvine Marriott hotel. Among the honorees are former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and musician Benny Carter, said league officials.

Proceeds from the dinner, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will go to support the league’s employment-placement and education programs, as well as to create a new business-skills training center for minorities, said league President and Chief Executive Officer George Williams.

The keynote speaker will be Ray Watson, vice chairman of the Irvine Co. According to a league statement, Watson “will offer his thoughts and vision about the changing nature of communities in this century.”

Watson was the first manager of planning for the Irvine Co., which is developing one of the largest urban environment master plans in the country, according to the league. Watson was the company’s president and CEO from 1973 to 1977.

Bradley, who served five terms as mayor of America’s second largest city, will receive the Whitney M. Young Jr. Award in recognition of his leadership, his efforts to improve race relations and years of public service, according to the league.

The annual awards dinner is the Urban League’s major fund-raiser for the year. For more information, call (714) 748-9976.
