BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : First Full-Squad Workout Today

First baseman Eric Karros showed up briefly Monday at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla., even though he is unsigned to a 1994 contract.

Karros, along with the other position players, is expected to report today when the first full-squad workout is held.

Dodger executive Fred Claire is working on signing Karros and shortstop Jose Offerman to multiyear contracts, which could avoid a couple of years of arbitration for both players. It’s a change in policy for the Dodgers, who until catcher Mike Piazza’s recent signing did not offer players with fewer than four years’ service multiyear contracts. This is the third season for both Karros and Offerman. Piazza signed a three-year, $4.2-million contract.

“You get into an arbitration year and you have some unknowns there,” said Claire, who has set March 3 as the final day for the club to either sign a player or renew their contracts. Karros made $435,000 last season, Offerman $300,000.

“I’m confident this will be worked out,” Karros said.

Todd Worrell, who looked effective while throwing batting practice, said his arm feels as good as it has since he had shoulder surgery after the 1989 season. “I plan to be in the first game of the spring this year rather than not pitch until the last week,” said Worrell, who pitched only 4 2/3 innings last spring because of injuries. “I have a lot less on my mind this season. When you are hurt, your mind is occupied with your condition, and it almost becomes a distraction. This spring, I’m in a good frame of mind.”

This is the first time in four seasons that Cory Snyder is returning to the same club for spring training, and he feels good about that.

“You know people and where things are, and it makes it so much easier,” said Snyder, who has played for different clubs in the past five seasons. “When I left after last season, I thought that I was the Dodger right fielder, and I’m going to go back this season and do the same thing. I have no control over it, but I think they know that I can do it from what I did last season.”

Snyder batted .266 in 143 games with 33 doubles, 11 home runs and 56 runs batted in, but struck out 147 times. The next highest was 88 strikeouts by Eric Davis. Snyder’s competition this spring will come primarily from Raul Mondesi.

Pitcher Ramon Martinez, the only no-show so far in camp, arrived in Miami on Monday and is expected to be at the workout today. . . . Darren Dreifort threw again and impressed pitching coach Ron Perranoski with his fastball and breaking ball.
