HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Santa Maria Valley Christian Guard Sets Record: 89 Points
Chad Bickley, a six-foot junior point guard for Santa Maria Valley Christian Academy, scored a CIF Southern Section record 89 points--including a record 20 three-point shots--to lead the Lions to a 130-48 Coast Valley League victory over Cuyama Valley on Friday night at Cuyama Valley.
Bickley’s 89 points shattered the previous record, which was set by Nick Tenneriello of Colbert in a game against Brentwood in the 1967-1968 season, by 15 points.
Bickley made 20 of 32 three-point attempts to break the previous record of 14, set by Joe Phears of Pomona in a game against Bassett in 1992.
Bickley also broke the record for three-point baskets in a season. His 150 this season breaks the previous record of 140, set by Steve Clover of Rolling Hills in the 1989-90 season.
Overall, Bickley made 27 of 48 shots from the field and 15 of 16 from the free-throw line.
Santa Maria Valley Christian Academy, 20-3 overall and 8-0 in Coast Valley play, is a private school of 72 students. Stan Bickley, Chad’s father, is the coach.
Cuyama Valley is 4-14, 1-7.
