No. 1 Los Alamitos Has Another Sunset Team on Its Horizon
Los Alamitos, the top-ranked team in Orange County, has played three of the four best teams in the Sunset League. All the Griffins have left is Huntington Beach, not an easy assignment.
Los Alamitos (13-0) plays the Oilers, the second-ranked team in the county, in the Southern Section Division II championship Saturday at Cerritos College. The Griffins, who have a 34-game unbeaten streak, are trying for their third consecutive title.
To get it, they will have to beat their third consecutive Sunset League opponent. Los Alamitos has defeated second-place Edison, 34-8, in the quarterfinals, and third-place Fountain Valley, 42-21, in the semifinals. The Griffins also beat fourth-place Marina, 42-0, in a nonleague game.
Now they take on the league’s best. Huntington Beach (13-0) also has beaten those three teams. The last time the county’s top two teams played was last season, when No. 2 Los Alamitos defeated No. 1 Esperanza, 34-14, in an Empire League game. The two tied, 14-14, in the Division II final.
Irvine (12-1) also will be seeking its third consecutive championship. The Vaqueros play Moreno Valley Canyon Springs in the Division IV final Saturday at Orange Coast College.
Trabuco Hills (10-3) will play in its fourth title game in six seasons when it faces Costa Mesa (9-2-2) in the Division VIII championship game Saturday at Trabuco Hills. It’s the second rematch in as many weeks for Trabuco Hills. The Mustangs defeated Pacific Coast League rival Laguna Hills, 42-20, in the semifinals. Costa Mesa defeated Trabuco Hills, 10-3, in league play.
Mater Dei will face Rialto Eisenhower in a playoff game for the fourth consecutive season. The two teams play in the Division I final Friday at Anaheim Stadium.
