BURBANK : City OKs Funds for More Police, Rangers
The Burbank City Council has approved $1.8 million in new spending--much of it to hire additional police officers and park rangers.
The council approved the spending unanimously at its meeting Tuesday.
The city will spend $387,000 a year to hire five police officers, and $116,000 to hire one full- and five part-time rangers to patrol city parks. An extra $27,000 was earmarked for crossing guards.
The City Council also approved about $300,000 to renovate city parks. The city agreed to spend $100,000 for a smoke alarm and security system for the Burbank Public Library, and $150,000 for restoration of the murals in City Hall.
One smaller item was $20,000 to save a speech program at Burbank High School that the council agreed to fund after students appealed. Up to $20,000 was set aside for improvements to the McCambridge Park tennis courts, as part of a plan to upgrade the city’s tennis program.
The new spending brings the total for the 1993-94 fiscal year to $75.9 million. With $76.4 million in revenues, that leaves the city with a surplus of $539,000.
