Circus Night Fun Raises $22,000 to Help Children
Variety--the Children’s Charity hosted 1,000 handicapped and underprivileged children at the opening night performance of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus on July 22. The benefit, sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, Inc., Ben & Jerry’s, Coca-Cola, El Pollo Loco, Nabisco and others, raised $22,000 for Variety’s medical, therapeutic and recreational services for handicapped, underprivileged and abused children in Los Angeles County.

John Wayne Cancer Institute raised $60,000 at the Kevin Dobson third annual Celebrity Golf Classic held July 23-25 at Ojai Valley Inn & Country Club. More than 250 guests joined in the festivities, including five children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren of the late actor John Wayne.

At City of Hope’s biennial national convention July 17-19 at the Beverly Hilton, it was announced that the medical center received contributions of more than $57 million from 500 support groups through its “Roll Call of the Nation.” Iris Rothstein and Stanley Eisenberg chaired the fund campaign. The money will support patient care, scientific research and medical education.

Laugh Factory’s Academy of Comedy & Art, a new nonprofit organization formed to assist needy comedians in crises, raised $10,000 at its kick-off benefit July 21. Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada hosted the event, which included performances by Martin Lawrence, Damon Wayans, Charles Fleischer, George Wallace and Dave Chappel.

University of Judaism’s Scholarship Fund received $50,000, net proceeds of a benefit evening of art, music and dining at the Frederick R. Weisman home on July 14.
