Cerritos : ABC Board Supports Suit to Challenge State Funding
The ABC Unified School District board has approved contributing $5,000 to support a lawsuit charging that the state provides unequal funding to it and some other California school districts.
The litigation is being pursued by the Assn. of Low Wealth School Districts, a consortium of 130 school systems. The association was formed two years ago to represent school districts that say they do not receive as much state funding as other school systems with similar enrollments.
If the lawsuit is successful, ABC Unified could receive $546,680 more in state funding each year, officials said.
Current state law provides for school systems to receive funding based on student enrollment.
Since the lawsuit was filed two years ago, 77 member school districts have chipped in $225,000 for legal fees.
