State Extends Permit Deadline for Group Home
Ventura County officials got a reprieve Tuesday in their plans to build a group home for the mentally ill on a site next to Camarillo State Hospital.
Gov. Pete Wilson signed a bill by state Sen. Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley) that gives the county two more years to get necessary building permits for the planned La Posada group home.
Under its lease with the state for the 19-acre project site, the county was required to get building permits by Jan. 1 this year for the facility, which will house up to 30 mentally ill people.
But the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, which is funding the project, has required the county to take extra steps in the planning process because the site is on a flood plain, said Dell Tompkins, legislative analyst for county Chief Administrative Officer Richard Wittenberg.
The new federal requirements delayed acquisition of building permits for the project, which threatened the county’s lease for the site.
Under the bill signed Tuesday, the county will have until Jan. 1, 1995, to obtain the permits.
Tompkins said county officials don’t expect to have a problem meeting the new deadline.
