Mission’s McKinney Will Play at St. Mary’s
Marlon McKinney, a first baseman from Mission College, signed a letter of intent Friday to play baseball next season at St. Mary’s.
McKinney, an All-Southern California Conference first baseman, batted .376 with two home runs and 24 runs batted in. He had eight stolen bases and was second on the team with 33 runs.
McKinney (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) is a 1991 graduate of Poly High and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Golf
Charlie Wi of Thousand Oaks struggled to a four-over 77 Friday at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, Canada, and finished in a tie for eighth at the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship.
Wi finished with a 72-hole total of 293 to wound up 11 shots behind champion Todd Demsey of Rancho Santa Fe and the University of Arizona, who also has won NCAA Division I and Southern California Golf Assn. titles this summer. Demsey finished with a 69 to win by six strokes.
Mike Turner of Sherman Oaks shot 78 in the final round and finished tied for 19th at 298. Jim Lundstrom of Mission Hills shot 75 to finish at 308.
The North Ranch Country Club will play host to one of the region’s oldest golf tournaments, The Southern, beginning Monday.
The tournament, open to members of the Women’s Southern California Golf Assn., was first played in 1900.
Monday, all 80 entries will play 18 holes. The low 16 will be placed in the championship flight and match play will be conducted thereafter.
A 36-hole championship match is set for Friday.
Linda Pearson of the La Canada-Flintridge Country Club won the title in sudden death last year after a 46-hole final at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club near San Diego.
Of the 80 players entered, 17 are current club champions and six are past Southern champions.
Baseball
Applications are being taken to play for the West Coast Senators, a traveling team for highly skilled 13- and 14-year-olds. Players from anywhere in the Valley area are invited to try out.
The team’s home field will be Westlake High, although games will be played throughout the Southland from Sept. 3 through late November.

A camp for high school players ages 14 and up is scheduled for Aug. 9-13 at The Master’s College in Newhall.
The fee ranges from $125 for day campers to $225 for those who elect to spend the night.

Soccer
The Valley United Wildthings, a 16-and-under girls soccer team, finished third in the U.S. National Championships in Phoenix, Ariz., last weekend.
The Wildthings are state and Far West regional champions.
