It is no secret that Raghib (Rocket) Ismail and his agent, Bob Woolf, have had contract talks with the Raiders during the last month.

However, when the Toronto Sun reported Wednesday that Ismail had reached an agreement with the Raiders, it came as a surprise to both Ismail and Woolf.

“Rocket called me up early Wednesday morning and the first thing he asked was, ‘Did I sign?’ ” Woolf said. “The report is totally erroneous. It is absolutely wrong.”

According to the Sun, Ismail agreed to a two-year, $3-million deal, with two additional years at the option of the Raiders, and an $800,000 signing bonus.

“So far, we’ve been just having conversations,” Woolf said. “We hope to reach an agreement soon. We’d like to have him in training camp when it opens.”

Ismail, 23, who played the last two seasons with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, has been working out regularly at the Raiders’ practice facility in El Segundo.

He is considered a free agent by CFL rules. His two-year player’s contract, which is separate from a personal-services deal he signed with Argonaut and King owner Bruce McNall, expired Feb. 15.

The Raiders, who drafted the former Notre Dame wide receiver-kick returner in the fourth round in 1991, hope that he will be able to boost the team’s passing game and special teams.

The Raiders might still be a week or more away from signing Ismail, but they might be only a few days away from agreeing to a deal with free-agent quarterback Don Majkowski.

The former Green Bay Packer may sign by Friday, according to Woolf, his agent.

“The Raiders are definitely on the top of his list,” Woolf said. “In fact, he has not even visited any other teams.”

If signed, Majkowski--who earned $1.7 million with Green Bay in 1992--will have a short-term contract that would be heavily based on incentives.

Although the Raiders recently signed former New York Giant quarterback Jeff Hostetler as a free agent, they say that a healthy Majkowski can compete with Hostetler, Vince Evans, Todd Marinovich and rookie Billy Joe Hobert.
