Pete Sampras, the world’s top-ranked player, won a showdown Sunday with second-ranked Jim Courier, beating the former No. 1 player, 6-3, 6-7 (7-1), 7-6 (7-2), Sunday to win the Hong Kong Open.

Sampras, who took over Courier’s top ranking last week when he won the Japan Open, used a service break in the sixth game to win the first set.

Courier saved a match point in the 12th game of the third set to force another tiebreaker, but this time it was the 21-year-old Sampras who won it with ease.

The 6-foot-5 Goellner, ranked 95th in the world, had never gotten past the quarterfinals of a pro event.

Unseeded Horacio de la Pena of Argentina saved two break points in the final set to beat third-seeded Jaime Yzaga of Peru, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the finals of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships at Charlotte, N.C.
