Pitcher Pete Janicki, the Angels’ No. 1 pick in the 1992 draft, was informed that his broken right elbow was caused by the same stress fracture that sidelined him for five months last year.

Janicki was told that immediate surgery is not necessary, and that the injury will be treated with rest and therapy. Janicki probably will miss the rest of the season, and Angel officials are concerned that the injury might be career-threatening.

Angel Manager Buck Rodgers is leaning toward keeping Julio Valera in the bullpen and putting Scott Lewis in the starting rotation until Russ Springer works out his problems at triple-A Vancouver. “I hate to screw up the bullpen when it has some semblance of order,” Rodgers said. . . . . Toronto General Manager Pat Gillick surprised Angel catcher Greg Myers by greeting him at the Milwaukee airport Sunday night and presenting him with a small box wrapped with with a bow. Inside was a 1992 World Series championship ring. “It was pretty class of him to do that,” Myers said. Myers played the first 8 1/2 years of his career in the Blue Jay organization before being traded last July for pitcher Mark Eichorn.
