Merrill Lynch & Co. reported first-quarter profit jumped 57%, paced by increases in interest and dividend income and higher revenue from trading and investment banking.
Net income at the nation’s biggest securities firm rose to a record $342 million, or $3.02 a share, from $217.5 million, or $1.86 a share, a year earlier.
Analysts had estimated the company would earn as much as $2.50 a share in the first quarter.
