SAN FERNANDO : Kids Embark on 1st ‘Easter Card Hunt’
Forget the eggs.
Many of the 50 children who showed up Friday at Pioneer Park for the first-ever “Easter Card Hunt” had their eyes on the top prize: a trading card of Orlando Magic rookie Shaquille O’Neal worth $25.
“That’s the one I wanted,” said 10-year-old Eddie Martinez, as he flipped through a stack of baseball and basketball cards.
The children, many of them members of the San Fernando National Little League, fanned the park seeking brightly colored plastic eggs filled with pieces of paper containing the prizes. Besides baseball cards, the children received free meals at local restaurants, video rentals, trolls and baseball pennants--all courtesy of San Fernando merchants.
“We just wanted to give something to the kids,” said Joe Apodaca, who donated 3,000 baseball cards from The Sports Page.
