Bowl’s ‘Summer Festival’ Season Expanded : Music: New preseason and postseason events now extend the schedule from June 20 to Sept. 18.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced further details of “Summer Festival 93” at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday in a press conference at the Bowl. New preseason and postseason events now extend the festival from June 20 to Sept. 18.

The 72nd summer at the Bowl begins with “Disney’s Symphonic Fantasy,” featuring more than 200 live Disney characters with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Azusa Pacific University Choir June 20 and 21. The conductor, vocal soloists and dancers remain unannounced.

The first postseason event is an “L.A. Festival at the Bowl” program Sept. 17, featuring the local premiere of Henryk Gorecki’s Third Symphony, a smash best-seller in the recording from conductor David Zinman and soprano Dawn Upshaw. Conductor and soloist for this Philharmonic concert were also unannounced.

On Sept. 18 the Moody Blues join the Philharmonic in a program of symphonic pop directed by arranger Larry Baird.

Jazz at the Bowl begins July 28 with a blues program featuring Etta James and bands led by guitarists Robert Cray and Robben Ford. The series continues with a tribute to Cannonball Adderley and Art Blakey Aug. 11, Tony Bennett with the Count Basie Orchestra Aug. 18, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Joe Henderson and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra Sept. 1, and an evening of Latin jazz with Tito Puente, Ruben Blades and Eddie Palmieri Sept. 14.

JVC Jazz at the Bowl brings Grover Washington Jr., Fourplay and keyboardist Keiko Matsui to the Bowl Aug. 29. The previously announced program with Ella Fitzgerald July 9 and 10 has been canceled due to the singer’s health problems. A replacement remains to be announced.

The tribute to Jerry Herman June 30 will benefit the Philharmonic Musicians Pension Fund, the Starlight Foundation and the Starbright Pavilion Foundation. Host Carol Channing was on hand at the press conference to sing “Hello, Dolly” with the composer and Lee Roy Reams.

Also at the conference was young violinist Tamaki Kawakubo, who will be featured in the Fireworks Finale Sept. 10 and 11. The program will again be televised by KCOP-TV Channel 13.

The “Open House at Hollywood Bowl” children’s festival begins July 5, with weekly program changes the week of Aug. 9. The second Hollywood Bowl Arts Fair will bring 100 area artisans together to display and sell their work June 19 and 20, with live entertainment.
