‘Godspell’ Later: “Godspell Now” won’t open at the Wilshire Theatre on April 28, the eve of the anniversary of the L.A. riots, as previously announced. Co-producer Joel Murray said the updated version of the Stephen Schwartz musical, to have been set in South-Central L.A. during the riots, will now open on June 16 at the Shubert Theatre in Chicago. The setting will still be a looted shopping mall, but it won’t be “indigenous to any city,” said Murray, who said the main reason for the switch is a concern that the ambitious technical requirements of the production--which will feature “pyrotechnics, collapsing walls, smoke”--won’t be ready in time. Ticket refunds will be made at point of purchase.
