The Chargers have only four returning players from last season’s third-place team. A total of 16 seniors graduated. What’s more, the Chargers have a new coach. McCaffrey takes over for longtime Coach Dan DeLeon, who compiled a 155-99 record at the school. No question, Ver Wayne and Lutterloh are the Chargers’ standouts. “Game-wise, we’re very inexperienced, with the exception of Ver Wayne,” McCaffrey said. “The quality of our team is that it has practiced and played as a team.” Without many proven players, the Chargers will rely on a “hard-nosed, business-like attitude,” according to McCaffrey. Whether it’s enough to enable the Chargers to contend remains to be seen. “We have to have a tremendous improvement before we can be competitive in league,” he said. Suffice to say, he likes what he has seen from Ver Wayne thus far. “Many throw harder,” McCaffrey said. “many have better breaking pitches, but he has the ability to get guys out.” He figures Capistrano Valley and Mater Dei will be the league favorites, with Mission Viejo a close third.
