Bill Redell, who coached Crespi High to the 1986 Southern Section Big Five Conference football championship, has been named coach at St. Francis. Redell, 50, replaces Andy Boynton, who was fired in December after leading the Golden Knights to a 3-6 record. Redell coached at Crespi in 1982, then took a job as an assistant for the USFL’s Boston Breakers. He returned to Crespi before the 1985 season, then left after the 1988 season. The St. Francis soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section Division II playoffs with a 3-1 overtime victory over Paramount in the second round and a 1-0 victory in overtime against Baldwin Park in the quarterfinals. The Golden Knights (19-2-2) played top-seeded Santa Ana Valley Tuesday in the semifinals. Dan Brubaker scored St. Francis’ goal against Baldwin Park on a header. All-star basketball games that will include senior boys and girls from 30 high schools, including seven in the Glendale area, will be played March 27 at La Canada High. The girls’ portion of the West San Gabriel Valley All-Star Classic will begin at 6 p.m. The boys’ game will start at 8. Players from Glendale, Hoover, La Canada, St. Francis, Flintridge Prep, Flintridge Sacred Heart and Glendale Academy will participate.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES The Glendale College men’s basketball team ended its season Saturday with a 91-72 loss to Antelope Valley in the first round of the Southern California regional of the state tournament. Nick Athanassakis scored 16 points and had seven rebounds for Glendale, which finished with a 16-15 record. Sophomore Will Burr and freshman Kenny Collins were selected first-team All-Western State Conference by the league’s coaches. The Glendale baseball team entered the week 6-3 and 2-1 in the Western State Conference after an 8-6 loss to Los Angeles Valley and a 10-6 victory over Santa Monica. Freshman left-hander John Nall gave up three runs and four hits in seven innings to earn the victory against Santa Monica. Mickey Moreno and John Horan each drove in two runs for the Vaqueros, who play Moorpark today and Santa Barbara on Saturday. America Rivas won the 1,500-meter and the 3,000-meter runs to lead the Glendale women’s track team to victory at Santa Barbara in a Western State Conference meet against Valley and Santa Barbara. Rivas won the 1,500 in five minutes five seconds. She won the 3,000 in 10:51.6. The Glendale men finished behind Valley but ahead of Santa Barbara and West Los Angeles. Glendale’s Luis Jacobo, Angel Salcido, Gilbert Roca, Ernie Medrano, Tony Estrada, Aaron Holding and Rigo Arroyo tied for the victory in the 5,000 with a time of 17:46.

COLLEGES The Occidental men’s basketball team concluded its best season since 1978-79 with a victory over Caltech and a loss to Cal Lutheran. The Tigers finished 16-9 and 9-5 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Occidental was 16-10 in 1978-79. Occidental’s Blair Slattery, a junior center from San Marino, was selected as the SCIAC player of the year. Slattery is the first Occidental player to win the award since Occidental Coach Brian Newhall received the honor in 1983. Slattery averaged 21.1 points and 10.8 rebounds, leading the conference in both categories. Occidental forward Sandy Brown, who averaged 13.6 points and 4.9 rebounds, was named second-team all conference. Slattery had 28 points and 10 rebounds in the Tigers’ 84-55 victory over Caltech. He had 20 points and 13 rebounds in a 66-55 loss to Cal Lutheran. The Occidental women’s team finished 13-12 and 7-5 in conference after a loss to La Verne and a victory over Cal Lutheran. Tanisha White scored 20 points for Occidental in its 60-55 loss to La Verne. Stephanie Francis scored 18 points in the 61-50 victory over Cal Lutheran.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK Johnny Sanders, Franklin--Sanders, a sophomore, scored 35 points and had 11 rebounds for the Panthers in their 71-68 victory over Jefferson in the quarterfinals of the City Section 3-A playoffs. Franklin (17-9) lost to Banning, 62-52, in the semifinals Tuesday night.

MISCELLANY Margarito Casillas of Hoover High was part of a three-man team that won the relay portion of the Rose Bowl triathlon in Pasadena on Sunday. Casillas, Richard Martin and John Bales finished the three-mile run, 10-mile bike ride and 400-meter swim in 44 minutes nine seconds. . . . Registration for the L.A. La Canada played Rancho Alamitos in the semifinals Wednesday. 2 Marshall: 20-6; The Barristers, who finished undefeated in the Northern Conference, defeated Fremont in the first round of the City 3-A playoffs, but their season ended with a 48-30 defeat by powerful North Hollywood in the quarterfinals. 3 Crescenta Valley: 18-5; The Falcons beat Torrance in the first round of the Southern Section 2-AA playoffs, but were upset by Burroughs, 42-38, in the second round. 4 Flintridge Sacred Heart: 21-5; Liz Doud scored 16 points and had 19 rebounds for the Tologs in a 47-46 Southern Section 4-AA quarterfinal loss to Pius X. 5 Franklin: 14-10; The Panthers’ season ended with a loss to Crenshaw in the City 4-A playoffs.
