Livermore Laboratory Restructures, Kills ‘Star Wars’ Unit: The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has scrapped the division where scientists labored on some of the major “Star Wars” projects of the Reagan era. The laboratory eliminated the “O” division as part of a reorganization of its physics directorate. The division was the inventor of the X-ray laser and Brilliant Pebbles anti-missile projects. A new Advanced Technology Program has taken the division’s place. The new program will seek out joint microelectronics projects with private industry while continuing to research ground-based missile defense.
