Kennedy’s Harris Selected State Athlete of the Week

Kennedy High junior Shaneya Harris has been selected the Cal-Hi Sports state athlete of the week.

She scored 33 points in a 52-51 City Section 4-A Division playoff victory over Banning, then added 29 to oust four-time defending 4-A champion Washington, 56-53.

For the second consecutive year, Shawn Bankhead of Cleveland and Joe Wyatt of Kennedy, both seniors, have been selected the co-most valuable players of the West Valley League in basketball.

Other first-team members are junior Johnny Williams of Taft, senior Tooki Akinloye of Cleveland, junior Philbert Hernandez and junior Trenell Floyd of Chatsworth.

Rosa Mendez of Valley College has been named Western State Conference South Division women’s player of the year.

Mendez, a sophomore guard from Roosevelt High, averaged 15.6 points and 4.8 assists and helped the Monarchs to a 30-5 record. Other Monarchs honored were sophomore center Amy Horst and freshman forward Nicole Baynes.

Two Pierce players, sophomore center Yolanda Davidian and freshman forward Shani Samuel, were honored along with Glendale’s Stephanie Ball, a sophomore guard, and Makela Theriault, a freshman forward. Also selected were two Canyons players--sophomore forward Kate Stoll and freshman guard Terra Bruessel.

Boxing

Pepe Reilly of Glendale, a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic boxing team and a former national amateur champion and Golden Gloves champion, will make his professional debut March 14 at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas.

Reilly, 21, will fight Mark Fornelli (1-2) of Las Vegas. The bout will be in the junior-welterweight division (142 pounds).

Reilly, who signed a promotional contract with Bob Arum, earned a berth on the U.S. Olympic team last year but was narrowly defeated in the second round of the Barcelona Games.

Colleges

Peter Micelli and Heather Ballard have been selected as Cal State Northridge’s men’s and women’s athlete of the month for February.

Micelli, a 6-foot-8 sophomore center, averaged 12.5 points a game for the Matadors basketball team. Ballard, a freshman, won the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events, and the 200 and 400 individual medleys at last month’s Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference championships.
