OUTLOOK A new-look infield with sophomores Monson and Hochgesang at second base and shortstop, former outfielder Smith at third base and former third baseman Ferraro at catcher should make for an interesting season. “It’s my biggest concern,” Elliott said. “Ferraro has caught most of his life and could be as good as (former all-league players) Jason Sugarman and Erren O’Leary. Smith was our leading hitter last year (.386 with 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored). But the sophomores are the big question mark.” Volpp, an honor student, is a control pitcher who was 6-3 as a junior. He mixes a good curveball with a changeup to keep hitters off stride. Sunderland, a quarterback who led the football team to the Southern Section Division VII championship, will be the No. 2 starter. Jacob Cuccia was set to start in the outfield but was ruled academically ineligible. Elliott, on the league race: “This is the best the league has been in my eight years here. Everybody has at least one quality pitcher.”
