Officials Warned of Bomb Danger

A task forced had warned of a terrorist threat to the World Trade Center years before Friday’s explosion, building administrators confirmed Saturday.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was warned by its own terrorism task force at least six years ago that it needed to take steps to protect the trade center from a car bomb blast, according to authority sources.

But almost none of the task force recommendations, aimed at preventing a bombing and protecting the complex should one occur, were implemented.

Port Authority officials on Saturday acknowledged the report’s existence, but said they could not comment on its recommendations without reviewing a copy.

The report was prepared by a task force of Port Authority police and civilian engineers, and was reviewed by an outside engineering consultant who approved the recommendations, said two senior authority officials who asked not to be identified.
