In Brief
* * * Belly, “Star,” Sire/Reprise. Ex-Throwing Muse and former Breeder Tanya Donelly emerges from the shadows of those bands’ Kristin Hersh and Kim Deal, respectively, to deliver her haunted blues and surreal rock with assurance and adventure. Like someone who’s just left home to settle in the big city, Donelly does some looking back and gets a little lost, but she shines when she asserts herself, as on the bittersweet “Feed the Tree.”
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent).
