Calbert Cheaney scored 27 points, and No. 1-ranked Indiana remained undefeated in the Big Ten by overcoming emotionally charged No. 9 Iowa, 73-66, Saturday night at Iowa City.

The Hoosiers, 20-2 overall and 9-0 in the Big Ten, did not let a pregame ceremony to retire Chris Street’s jersey stop them from sweeping the Hawkeyes (14-5, 3-4) this season. Indiana beat Iowa, 75-67, on Jan. 6 at Bloomington, Ind.

The Hawkeyes retired Street’s No. 40 jersey in memory of their inspirational leader, who was killed in a traffic accident Jan. 19.

During the ceremony, Indiana Coach Bobby Knight kept his team in the locker room. “I don’t think it was for us to do. I think it was for Iowa and their fans,” Knight said.

Knight said he was pleased that the Street family had requested that the jersey be retired before this game.

Iowa led the Hoosiers by 10 points twice during the first half before trailing by 38-37 at halftime.

Down the stretch, Indiana made eight of 10 free throws, including seven of eight by Greg Graham.

Graham finished with 15 points. Acie Earl led Iowa with 16 points.

No. 2 Kentucky 82, Vanderbilt 67--Travis Ford had four three-pointers and handed out a career-high nine assists as the Wildcats avenged their only loss by defeating the Commodores in a Southeastern Conference game at Lexington, Ky.

Kentucky (17-1, 8-1) made 14 of 30 shots from three-point range and scored 30 second-chance points.

Vanderbilt (17-4, 7-2), which beat the Wildcats, 101-86, on Jan. 13 in Nashville, remained winless in 19 games against the Wildcats in Rupp Arena.

Jamal Mashburn, who fouled out with 2:31 left, finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. McCaffrey led Vanderbilt with 19 points.

Memphis State 68, No. 4 Cincinnati 66--With Anfernee Hardaway slowed by flu, Billy Smith scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Tigers (14-7, 3-2) to an upset of the Bearcats in a Great Midwest Conference game at Memphis, Tenn.

Cincinnati (17-2, 4-1) went into the game with a 14-game winning streak.

Of Hardaway, who made only two of 10 shots and finished with 13 points, Memphis State Coach Larry Finch said: “Anfernee has the flu. We didn’t allow him to practice Thursday. He was so tired, he just wasn’t moving.”

Cincinnati trailed, 67-66, when Lazelle Durden missed a three-point try from the left corner with 10 seconds to play. Memphis State rebounded and Hardaway made a foul shot with five seconds remaining.

No. 5 Duke 67, Notre Dame 50--There were simply too many Hills for the Fighting Irish to climb against the Blue Devils at South Bend, Ind.

Notre Dame (8-11) threatened the two-time defending national champions for almost 27 minutes before Grant Hill and Thomas Hill went to work for Duke (17-3).

The Hills, who are not related, scored 12 of Duke’s first 16 second-half points, derailing Notre Dame’s momentum and launching a run that sent the Blue Devils to their 35th consecutive nonconference victory.

Thomas Hill finished with 17 points, Grant Hill with 16.

No. 6 North Carolina 104, North Carolina State 58--The Tar Heels rebounded from two Atlantic Coast Conference losses, scoring the most points in their 180-game series with the Wolfpack in this ACC game at Chapel Hill, N.C.

The previous high game for the Tar Heels against N.C. State was a 101-78 victory in 1972, while they barely missed the largest margin of victory, 52 points in a 62-10 rout in 1921. The Tar Heels beat the Wolfpack by 33 last month in Raleigh.

The Wolfpack started the game with only eight players and finished with six after point guard Curtis Marshall left during the first half because of a concussion and Todd Fuller fouled out late in the second half.

George Lynch scored 14 points for the Tar Heels (18-3, 7-2).

Kevin Thompson led the Wolfpack (5-12, 1-8) with 15 points.

No. 10 Nevada Las Vegas 82, UC Santa Barbara 69--J.R. Rider scored 31 points as the Runnin’ Rebels extended the nation’s longest home-court winning streak to 58 games.

Boston College 63, No. 14 Seton Hall 62--Billy Curley, who had 24 points, scored with less than a second remaining to give the Eagles an upset victory in a Big East game at Boston.

Boston College (13-5, 7-3) led for most of the second half and opened an 11-point lead halfway through the period. But Seton Hall (16-6, 6-4) chipped away at the lead on Terry Dehere’s outside shooting.

Coming off losses to Villanova and Syracuse, Pitt (14-4, 7-4) survived being held without a field goal over the final 3:09 to drop St. John’s into a first-place tie in the conference. Boston College and St. John’s are 7-3 in the Big East. St. John’s is 12-6 overall.

Jerry McCullough, Pitt’s leading scorer with a 17.6 average, had his second consecutive off-game and was held to five points, only one during the second half.

After sitting out 13 games because of a foot injury he aggravated during Arkansas’ season opener, Williamson has returned to the lineup to average 13.3 points and 5.1 rebounds in five games.

Stacey Poole, with 16 points, led Florida (12-7, 5-4).

No. 20 Marquette 87, DePaul 76--Freshman Roney Eford scored 24 points at Rosemont, Ill., as the Warriors won their 10th consecutive game to take the Great Midwest Conference lead.

Brandon Cole scored 19 points for DePaul (11-10, 2-4).

No. 21 Utah 84, Colorado State 71--Josh Grant scored 24 points and Jimmy Soto added 21 to lead the Utes (17-4, 10-1) to a Western Athletic Conference victory at Salt Lake City. The victory avenged an earlier loss to the Rams, who are 13-8, 5-6.
