CELESTIAL DELIGHTS: The Best Astronomical Events Through 2001 by Francis Reddy and Greg Walz-Chojnacki (Celestial Arts: $16.95; 134 pp., illustrated). As even ancient astronomers knew, the regular motions of the heavenly bodies makes it possible to predict their movements and prepare for observations. The authors offer brief, non-technical explanations of various celestial phenomena and an assortment of easily readable charts, diagrams and maps. Amateur scientists will want to mark their calendars after consulting this engaging book: In 1993, Southern California residents can look forward to a partial solar eclipse on May 21, the Perseid meteor shower on Aug. 12, and a complete lunar eclipse on Nov. 29.
