Feinstein’s Desert Bill
As a fossil hunter engaged in serious research in the California desert, I am dismayed by the sweeping scope of the Feinstein bill. Every unstudied locality in the California desert will be “protected” from anyone interested in expanding knowledge. Protection for rare wildlife species and fragile archeological sites is appropriate, but the overkill in this bill is truly political clout and/or money.
The public backlash from this kind of ill-considered legislation will make the truly needed advances in environmental protection all the more difficult to achieve.
