GOINGS ON / SANTA BARBARA : Pride of Mexico : Ballet Folclorico troupe will perform traditional dances from 12 of the country’s states.
Dances and ceremonies traditional to 12 Mexican states will be illustrated vividly tonight when the Ballet Folclorico Nacional de Mexico visits the Lobero Theatre.
The group’s repertoire includes the Michoacan wedding dance, the Jalisco fiesta, the Sonora dance (also known as the Deer Dance because the main dancer dresses in a deer head and is chased by hunters), and the Yaqui Indian dance known as the Puebla. Dancers will be backed by the sounds of mariachis, marimbas and Indian percussion instruments. The performance will begin at 8 p.m. General admission is $22.50. Call 963-0761. The Lobero is at 33 E. Performance artist James Luna will present “Indian Tales”--a personal, narrative look at what it’s like to grow up Indian in 20th-Century America--at Santa Barbara’s Center Stage Theater Friday night. C. J. Jones, a deaf actor who has performed with the touring company of “Children of a Lesser God” and has appeared on “Sesame Street,” will present his one-man show “C. J. Jones The Living Cartoon!” at the Center Stage Theater in Santa Barbara Saturday night.
Through improvisation, audience participation, gestures, voice, clowning and song--(his repertoire includes an a capella “deaf rap”) Jones will share stories dealing with life experiences. He will touch on issues of self-esteem and self-image, particularly with regard to growing up deaf and black.

The critically acclaimed duet of Lynn Harrell (cello) and Yefim Bronfman (piano) will visit the Lobero Theater on Saturday night, for a performance of works for, what else, cello and piano. The program will include Beethoven’s Sonata No. 4 in C Major, Schubert’s Sonata in A Minor for Arpeggione and Piano and Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for Cello and Piano. With a violinist named Violaine, how can you go wrong?
That’s Violaine Melancon, one-third of the Peabody Trio, which will be at UC Santa Barbara’s Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall on Friday at 8 p.m. The ensemble, winner of the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1989, also includes pianist Seth Knopp and cellist Kathe Jarka.
The evening’s program will include Schubert’s Trio in D-flat Major, Op. 99, Haydn’s Trio in E-flat Major, and Faure’s Trio in D Minor, Op. 120. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. General admission is $15 and $11. Call 893-3535.

Finally, for those of you interested in slightly larger ensembles, the Anacapa String Quartet, UCSB’s quartet-in-residence, will perform at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Barbara Sunday at 8 p.m. The program will include Mozart’s Quartet in A Major, Lutoslawski’s Quartet No. 1, and Brahms’ Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 67. Tickets are $8. The church is at 305 E. Anapamu St.
