PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Hernandez’s Goals Get Santa Ana Past Saddleback
Sophomore Oscar Hernandez scored twice to lead Santa Ana to a 2-0 victory over Saddleback and its second consecutive Orange tournament championship.
But the victory is not necessarily a good omen, according to Santa Ana Coach Bob Pacieznik.
“Last year, the same thing happened,” he said. “(Just like last year) we had a 9-2 (nonleague) record, became No. 1 in the (Sunset) league and the following week we did badly in league.
“I’d give all this up--the trophy, everything--to win league.”
Santa Ana (10-1-1) scored first when Hernandez followed up a rebound. Candido Lopez broke away, sped down the field and took a shot, which was deflected by goalie Eddy Lopez. Hernandez tapped in the rebound from the right side.
A few minutes into the second half, the ball crossed in front of the goal, and Hernandez kicked it in on the Saints’ first shot of the half.
Saddleback (9-3) took 13 shots, but was unable to capitalize; Santa Ana had 11 shots on goal.
