OUTLOOK
Without Christine Garner and Shari Needham, the players of the year in the league, Tustin lacks the size and scoring punch it has counted on in the past. “We’re shooting less than 30% as a team and I know we’re going to shoot better but we’ve never had anyone on this team have to carry the scoring load before,” Falk said. “We have to continue to make the emotional adjustment to realize that we are going to have to win games with defense this year and we have to start shooting better. If we don’t then we’re not going to beat anybody good.” On defense, the addition of Jim Weeks, former Costa Mesa coach, as an assistant should help, but Falk says the team is still adjusting to the almost-exclusively man-to-man Weeks teaches. Falk has been impressed with the play of Oakley, who despite not starting for the junior varsity last season has developed into the team’s leading rebounder and best defender. Falk expects Davis and Kirkwood to handle much of the offensive load. “We’re going to be hard-pressed to beat Newport or Woodbridge, but at least we should be able to give them a good game by league time,” Falk said.
