BEEFING UP: Sheriff Brad Gates’ small empire expanded a bit this week: He’s agreed to take charge of security for the County Transportation Authority. While armed officers won’t ride on buses, they’ll take trouble calls and provide protection for the millions of dollars in revenue deposits, previously the duty of an unarmed private service. . . . The transportation board will pay Gates’ department $1.2 million for a contract through June, 1994.
