COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NATION : BYU Down to Third Quarterback

Brigham Young sophomore quarterback Steve Clements, knocked out for the year with a dislocated shoulder during Saturday night’s game at Hawaii, will undergo surgery next week. John Walsh, another BYU sophomore quarterback with an ailing shoulder, has opted to forgo surgery in the hope that he can play again this season. Walsh, a Torrance resident who played his senior season at Carson High, separated his right shoulder against UCLA Sept. 19. Sophomore Ryan Hancock will be BYU’s starting quarterback and will be backed up by sophomore Tom Young.

BYU’s Byron Rex called a Honolulu radio station Tuesday to apologize to fans for his actions for waving the football in the face of Rainbow safety Bryan Addison after scoring a touchdown to give BYU a 30-29 lead with 5:01 to play. Rex then shouted profanities and spat at fans. The Rainbows got the last laugh, however, when they scored with 37 seconds to play to win, 36-32. “I just want to apologize to the people of Hawaii because that goes completely against my nature to do something like that,” Rex said. BYU says it will take disciplinary action against Rex.
