BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Lachemann Won’t Return as Coach

Pitching coach Marcel Lachemann quit the Angels’ coaching staff effective next season.

Lachemann, 51, said Tuesday that he has no other job lined up, but said that he might join his brother, Rene, as a pitching coach if Rene gets a managerial job.

“These guys are like a second family to me--sometimes like a first family,” Lachemann said of the Angels. “I’ve been very fortunate I’ve had a lot of good people to work with and I will miss them, but life goes on.”

“We’re going to feel a sense of loss, but time’s a great healer,” Manager Buck Rodgers said of Lachemann’s departure.

Said Jim Abbott, who might have been sent to the minor leagues last season if not for Lachemann: “I couldn’t possibly come up with words to express how much Marcel Lachemann has meant to me as a friend and as a coach. “He’s the reason why I’m here. He stuck by me through difficult times. I’m going to miss him terribly.”

Said reliever Bryan Harvey: “It’s just a sad day. Lach is one of the best. I’ve been with him for five years and it’s going to be tough (without him).”
