PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Henley Has Some Great Teachers
The education of Darryl Henley continues. A fourth-year cornerback who became a starter in 1991, Henley learned a few things from Miami’s Mark Duper Sept. 20 and a couple more from the Jets’ Al Toon last Sunday.
“Duper got me on a ‘dead leg’ (on a 38-yard touchdown play),” Henley said. “With a quarterback like (Dan) Marino, he can really do it to you.”
Toon, who is 6 feet 4, tried the same fake, but Henley stayed with him. But Toon had another trick to show Henley, who is 5-9. Posting up like a basketball player, Toon got in front of Henley in the end zone, but Jet quarterback Browning Nagle threw the pass a bit too high. Henley had already been called for pass interference.
“I can jump,” Henley said. “I can dunk a basketball on the run, but I didn’t want to get into a jump-ball situation with him. I did and got the pass interference.”
This week, Henley faces San Francisco’s Jerry Rice.
Opponents have been inside the Rams’ 20-yard line 13 times and have scored 63 points on seven touchdowns and five field goals. The Rams have three touchdowns and three field goals--30 points--to show for nine trips inside the 20. . . . Talent search: Since the 47-man rosters were announced Aug. 31, the Rams have made 19 personnel moves and acquired seven new players, six of whom are still on the team. . . . The Rams waived linebacker Brian Townsend from their practice squad.
