Nation IN BRIEF : MICHIGAN : Detroit Teachers to Return Today
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
City school teachers in Detroit have voted to return to work today, ending a four-week strike that had idled 168,000 students. The school board and the union representing 10,500 teachers reached a tentative agreement that the teachers will vote on Tuesday. The agreement would give teachers pay increases of up to 7% over two years and allow for a boost in decision-making authority at schools. But the raises will probably be paid for by laying off up to 250 teachers.
