NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : 3 Area Players Help U.S. Win Paralympic Gold
Dave Kiley of San Dimas, Curtis Bell of La Puente and Jim Miller of Rancho Cucamonga were part of the U.S. wheelchair basketball team that won a gold medal at the Paralympics at Barcelona, Spain.
The United States defeated the Netherlands, 39-36, in the championship game after beating Spain, Argentina, Canada, Great Britain and Australia.
Kiley, who scored four points against the Netherlands, also won four medals in skiing at the Winter Paralympics in Albertville, France.
Kiley, Bell and Miller are all members of the Pomona-based Casa Colina Condors wheelchair basketball team.
Dave Bollwinkel, Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball coach for the past five seasons, resigned to become an assistant coach at the University of Dayton, an NCAA Division I school.
Kevin Patterson, an assistant under Bollwinkel throughout his tenure at Division II Pomona, was named the Broncos’ interim coach.
Bollwinkel, the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. coach of the year in 1991, compiled a 58-70 record at Pomona.
The Broncos were 15-14 in 1991 and 15-13 last season, the first time in 25 years that the school finished with 15 or more wins in consecutive seasons.
Caryn Cranston, a former standout in basketball and tennis for Pomona-Pitzer College, has been awarded a $5,000 NCAA scholarship for postgraduate study.
Cranston, who graduated from San Marino High, was the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball player of the year last season. She was also a member of the college’s 1992 Division III national champion tennis team.
USC football Coach Larry Smith will be the featured speaker Friday at the Pasadena Quarterback’s Club luncheon at Brookside Country Club.
The club, in its 48th year, is open to all with annual dues of $30. Lunch is $10 for members. $12 for guests.

The unbeaten Pomona-Pitzer football team will play host to Redlands, the defending champion in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, on Saturday.
Pomona-Pitzer (2-0), which has not defeated Redlands since 1986, beat Colorado College, 8-7, on Saturday.
The San Gabriel Volleyball Club will hold tryouts for boys’ teams in three divisions on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. at Pasadena City College.
Boys 14 and under, 16 and under and 18 and under are eligible to participate in the 2 1/2-month program, which is under the auspices of the United States Volleyball Assn.

The 11th annual After-Stroke Athletic Games will be held Oct. 9 in Glendora.
The event, partially sponsored by the Organization for After-Stroke Resources, will include competition in horseshoes, bowling, ringball, target toss, boccie ball and shuffleboard. There will also be a pentathlon involving five events.

A benefit golf tournament sponsored by the Arcadia Rotary Club will be held Oct. 14 at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino.
The $100 entry fee includes registration, green fees, cart, continental breakfast, lunch and dinner. Proceeds will be donated to the Lincoln Training Center, a nonprofit organization that provides work with pay for developmentally disabled adults in the San Gabriel Valley.
