IRVINE : Transformer Failure Causes Power Outage
A failed transformer knocked out electricity late Friday morning to more than 4,000 homes around the UC Irvine campus for about 1 1/2 hours.
The outage darkened traffic signals along Culver Drive near the San Diego Freeway, sending police officers to seven intersections to direct traffic. No accidents were reported, Sgt. Gary Shull said.
About 4,280 homes in the city’s Turtle Rock community and the area north of UCI lost power, according to Southern California Edison spokeswoman Josephine Piantedosi.
The outage was caused by a failed power transformer near the Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course, which malfunctioned shortly before 10:30 a.m. Power was restored to nearly all customers by noon, Piantedosi said.
