Balanced Budget Amendment
Any proposal for solving a problem has some drawbacks. It takes little thinking to simply fault a proposal with no mention of a better one. Your editorial “Now Let’s Get Serious on the Budget” (June 15) is a good example. The Times condemns the proposed balanced budget amendment because it would mean huge spending cuts and tax increases. Your writer then glibly adds, “Now, some right moves on the budget, please.”
Please, Mr. Editor, what are the right moves that solve a huge deficit problem without huge spending cuts and tax increases? The truth is that any effective reduction of our deficit will involve some pain and paying the price. That’s getting serious, Mr. Editor.
