TENNIS ROUNDUP : Edberg, Sampras Survive Upsetting Day in London

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg and second-seeded Pete Sampras survived a day of upsets Thursday to reach the fourth round of the Queen’s Club grass-court tournament at London.

Edberg battled for 2 hours 13 minutes to defeat Wally Masur of Australia, 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4. Sampras got past Gianluca Pozzi of Italy, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

Jason Stoltenberg of Australia surprised fourth-seeded Guy Forget of France, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4; Shuzo Matsuoka of Japan knocked off fifth-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia, 6-4, 6-3, and Pat Cash upset eighth-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 6-4, 7-5.

Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion, came back later in the day to defeat 10th-seeded Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 6-4, 6-3.

Seventh-seeded Brad Gilbert defeated ninth-seeded David Wheaton, 6-4, 5-7, 11-9.

Sampras missed six set points at 6-5 before closing out the first set in a tiebreaker.

“I played OK but not great,” Sampras said. “I played six weeks on clay before this and it takes time to adjust.”

Top-seeded Zina Garrison reached the quarterfinals of a women’s grass-court tournament at Edgbaston, England, but three of the other top five seeded players were eliminated.

Garrison defeated 17-year-old Shirli-Ann Siddall of Britain, 6-3, 6-3, setting up a quarterfinal match against seventh-seeded Pam Shriver, who ousted Michelle Jaggard-Lai of Australia, 6-4, 6-1.

Jo Durie of Britain, seeded 10th, ousted second-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of France, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4; ninth-seeded Larisa Savchenko-Neiland of Latvia eliminated third-seeded Gigi Fernandez of Puerto Rico, 6-4, 6-4, and Andrea Temesvari of Hungary upset fifth-seeded Natalia Zvereva of Belarus, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Fourth-seeded Lori McNeil defeated 15th-seeded Kimberly Po, 6-4, 6-3, and sixth-seeded Brenda Schultz of the Netherlands outlasted Rennae Stubbs of Australia, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Jonathan Stark recorded 12 aces and beat Gilad Bloom of Israel, 6-3, 6-7 (12-10), 7-5, in a 2-hour 51-minute match in the Continental Grass Court Championships at Rosmalen, the Netherlands.

Second-seeded Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands defeated Christian Saceanu of Germany, 6-3, 6-4; Henrik Holm of Sweden upset sixth-seeded Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands, 6-4, 6-3, and eighth-seeded Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands got past Simon Youl of Austria, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
