NORTHRIDGE : CSUN New Teacher Project Wins Award
Cal State Northridge officials will travel to Washington next week to accept an award for a university program that helps new teachers thrive in the classroom.
A 1991 Christa McAuliffe Award, one of eight given nationwide by the American Assn. of State Colleges and Universities, will be given to CSUN in recognition of “creating new strategies for ensuring the quality of graduates in the field of education.”
Carolyn Ellner, dean of CSUN’s school of education, and Susan Wasserman, director of the university’s California New Teacher Project, are scheduled to attend the ceremony Monday in the Rose Garden at the White House.
Since the California New Teacher Project started at CSUN 2 1/2 years ago, 105 beginning teachers have been assisted by the pilot project.
Participants are linked with a retired teacher who gives them pointers in the classroom, a fellow teacher who helps with school-related problems and the university teacher who supervised their student teaching.
