Downey : No Winners Yet in 2 Races for City Council

More than a week after the City Council election, candidates are still wondering who won two of the five Downey council seats.

The most recent figures from the county registrar-recorder show that in District 1, incumbent Diane Boggs leads challenger Johnette Stickel by 44 votes to represent southeast Downey. In District 5, Joyce Lawrence is ahead of Steve Allen by 194 votes for the council’s at-large seat.

Final tallies have been delayed by the need to hand-count the write-in ballots for Ross Perot for President. The registrar also had to count absentee ballots brought to polling places on Election Day. Countywide, this added up to about 100,000 ballots.

An updated vote count is expected today, but results may not become official until June 23. Until then, no election winners will be sworn in. In the other two council races, incumbent Councilwoman Barbara Riley continued to hold a solid lead in District 2, as did Gary McCaughan in District 3.
