United Hostesses Give $200,000 to Cedars-Sinai

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center President Sheldon King was presented a $200,000 check toward United Hostesses Charities’ $2-million pledge to fund a cardiac research floor in the Barbara and Marvin Davis Research Building. The donation took place at the United Hostesses’ membership luncheon May 13 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. In addition to welcoming new members, the group celebrated 50 years of fund-raising and announced a $32,500 donation to the Harold J. Mirisch Fellowship and a $100,000 donation to the Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center in Culver City. Marilyn Gilfenbain is United Hostesses president. Co-chairs were Rikki Rosen and Celia Petkin.

ERAS (Educational Resources & Services) Center will receive more than $10,000, proceeds from pledges collected by 300 students of members of the Music Teachers Assn. of California-West Los Angeles Branch. The pledge drive was conducted at an April 28 “Play-a-thon” at the Century City Shopping Center & Marketplace.

People Assisting the Homeless has announced receipt of $195,000 for its service center building fund: $10,000 from the David Geffen Foundation, $60,000 from the County of Los Angeles Community Development Commission and $125,000 from two anonymous donors. PATH provides Westside programs for the homeless and people at risk of becoming homeless.

De Mi Corazon Foundation will receive $135,000 to aid child abuse victims. The funds were raised at a May 17 telethon hosted by KVEA-TV and Edward James Olmos. The “From My Heart” event was held at Universal Studios.

American Heart Assn. will receive $130,000, proceeds from the Fourth Annual Strouds Golf and Tennis Classic held May 21 at the Industry Hills and Sheraton Resort. Bill Stroud, chairman and CEO of Strouds, hosted the daylong event, attended by 300 guests. Proceeds will fund cardiovascular research and community education programs.

LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program received a $50,000 grant from the American Honda Foundation May 6 to support the 19 programs serving 3,800 elementary school students.

Alzheimer’s Assn.’s seventh annual awards luncheon May 15 at the Four Seasons netted $9,000. Honorees were Stephen E. Breuer, the Turken Family Foundation, Grace Farwell Granger, Jeffrey L. Cummings, and Laurie and Peter Grad.

University of Judaism raised $108,000 at its spring concert May 21 featuring 11-year-old violin prodigy Sarah Chang at Gindi Auditorium. Proceeds benefit Lee College, the university’s liberal arts undergraduate school. Funds will support the academic and scholarship programs. Marilyn Ziering and Bryan Isaacs co-chaired the event.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s support group, Helping Hand, honored Henry Winkler and his wife, Stacey, as “Parents of the Year” May 8 at its 63rd annual Mother’s Day Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton. Helping Hand presented a $455,000 check to Cedars-Sinai Obstetrics & Gynecology Chairman Dr. Lawrence Platt.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving held a luncheon and auction May 10 at the Century Plaza Hotel, netting more than $80,000 for MADD’s free victim assistance and education programs. The event, attended by 500 guests, was co-chaired by Paula Bland and Rodney Joffe.

Westside Center for Independent Living netted more than $110,000 at its May 14 gala, which honored Richard K. Eamer, the late Dr. Arnold R. Beisser and John Wentworth for their dedication to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities. WCIL, a non-residential, public-benefit corporation, provides support services and training programs to help people with disabilities lead self-sufficient and productive lives.
