BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : A Reminder of First-Round Failures

When Tom Goodwin scored in the ninth inning of the Dodgers’ 1-0 victory in Chicago on Friday, he didn’t know that he was one of only three Dodger first-round draft picks who have impacted a major league game in the last 10 years.

But with the amateur draft scheduled for Monday, the Dodger scouting department probably knew.

Although he has been passed as the center fielder of the future by Raul Mondesi, Goodwin is the only one of three celebrated 1989 first-round Dodger picks to make the major leagues.

Goodwin has scored in both of his appearances as a pinch-runner this season. In his only at-bat, he singled and recorded his first major league run batted in.

“When it comes to talking about those three first-round picks, I’m always forgotten and the other two (Kiki Jones and Jamie McAndrew) are always mentioned,” Goodwin said. “But that’s all right. I figure I keep quiet and something will happen.”

Kevin Gross is scheduled to return to the rotation today after missing his start Saturday with flu. Gross struck out 12 Cubs in his first game against them this season but is 6-15 with a 4.96 earned-run average against them in his career. . . . Orel Hershiser said he should not miss any work after jamming his foot while crossing first base in the sixth inning, an injury which forced him from the game. . . . The Dodger clubhouse was in an uproar before Saturday’s game as players watched Pepperdine pitcher Patrick Ahearne defeat Wichita State in the College World Series. “I have met him and he told me that he patterns himself after me, but to see it is unbelievable,” said Hershiser, who was planning to send Ahearne a congratulatory telegram. “He does everything like me, even rubbing his foot across the rubber. I guess now he’ll have to have shoulder surgery.”
