Washington Betters Record, Helps Tritons Finish Sixth
Junior Erica Washington ran a school-record time of 12.01 seconds to win the 100 meters and help the UC San Diego women win sixth place, their fourth consecutive top-six finish, at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships in Waterville, Me.
Washington surpassed her school record of 12.04 seconds, which she had tied Wednesday. She established that record last season.
UCSD’s women have finished fourth, fourth, sixth and sixth the past four seasons.
UCSD’s men were 12th, the Tritons’ best finish ever. Their only place-winner Saturday was Damian Coleman, who was sixth in the triple jump at 46 feet, 6 1/2 inches.
Also placing for the UCSD women were Denise McFayden, who was second in the 1,500 meters in 4 minutes, 35.09 seconds, and Jill Lyday, sixth in the discus with a toss of 138-11.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The United States edged Japan in a five-game match in Japan to improve to 5-0 in the World League. The 15-10, 15-11, 14-16, 9-15, 15-12 victory was the Americans’ seventh in a row overall as they prepare for the Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
Bob Samuelson led the way with 38 kills and four blocks. Steve Timmons added 26 kills and four blocks. Dan Greenbaum filled in for regular setter Jeff Stork, who did not make the trip because of the birth of his second child earlier this week. The United States plays Japan again today.
