OCC’s Golf Team to Compete for State Championship Today
Orange Coast, which finished runner-up in the Orange Empire Conference, is the only local golf team competing in the community college state championships today at Glendora Country Club.
OCC earned the berth with a third-place finish at the Southern California Regional tournament May 4 at Bakersfield Country Club. Palomar won the 36-hole tournament at 756. College of the Desert (757) was second, OCC (758) third and Bakersfield (759) fourth, earning the final championship berth.
Long Beach, the South Coast League champion, and Saddleback, the Orange Empire champion, were considered the favorites going into the regional, but failed to qualify. Long Beach shot 764 and Saddleback 765.
OCC’s performance was keyed by sophomore Ken Calvert, who won the individual title by 10 strokes at 138. Calvert, a sophomore from Estancia High, was six under for the two rounds. He opened with a six-under 66 and then shot par 72 on the second 18.
John Dauphin of Saddleback, Brad Burkey of Cypress and Jim Spurlock of Rancho Santiago will be competing as individuals in today’s tournament as well.
