SANTA CLARITA : Head Start Program to Be Held in Park
Until an alternative site is identified, the city of Santa Clarita will provide space in Newhall Park for the city’s first Head Start program.
The City Council decided last week to install a portable Head Start classroom at the park for up to two years, despite concern from residents and city officials who said the education program for low-income children will take up valuable park space.
Still, the City Council asked city staff to return May 12 with a report on alternative sites. But if city park officials cannot arrange for an alternative site by July 1--the date the program is scheduled to begin--the city will be forced to use Newhall Park or lose the Head Start program altogether.
The city has already invested $15,000 in material and staff time to establish the Head Start program at Newhall Park. Head Start has spent about $40,000 in architectural fees and utility costs for the site.
The Head Start facility would have about 14,175 square feet of classroom and outdoor area and serve 136 children.
